A semi-automatic rifle can also meet California compliance criteria if it is featureless . A featureless rifle is a semi-automatic center-fire rifle having a detachable magazine, but does not have any of the following:
A pistol grip protruding below the action
A flash suppressor
A collapsible stock
A folding stock
A forward pistol grip

Some of the methods used to meet the requirements of a featureless rifle in California are:
A Kydex grip-wrap can be added to prevent the thumb from wrapping around the pistol grip.
A muzzle brake designed to reduce recoil and muzzle jump can replace a flash suppressor.
The stock can be mechanically fixed so it cannot fold or collapse by hand.
